It was my birthday last Saturday! 🎂 I am a birthday person, what can I say? I am the kind of person who sends subtle reminders with countdowns to their loved ones, “lol one month for my birthday!” kind of stuff. I made it to another year, and that to me, in the world we live in, is worth celebrating, my guys. This year, because I am trying to stay a bit off social media, I didn’t post anything the usual photo about it, and surprisingly, it felt great. I also had this tiara that says, in multicolor felt letters “IT’S MY BIRTHDAY” so I wore it from the minute I opened my eyes til I was actually a bit embarrassed of being such an attention whore. Because why post on Instagram about your birthday and get Happy Birthday’s from strangers online when you can wear a silly tiara and get Happy Birthday’s from actual strangers on the street? Exactly.
Anyway, last year I wrote a little sci-fi short story about my first-time travel experience, and this year I wanted to do something I’ve seen around in Substack and think it’s a good format: X things that I have learned in my X years alive.
Let’s go.
Never be ashamed of your age. Ageing is cool. Basically, because the other option is to be dead, which is a No for me?
Meal planning absolutely never works.
Buying flowers does.
Is it possible that I don’t know that many things? I’ve already run out of ideas.
The people who want to be your friends will reach for you, if it’s always you the one who has to keep chasing to hang out, maybe it’s not worth it.
Same for a love interest! Do.Not.Chase. The energy has to be 50-50.
Credit Score is real and it’s coming for you.
If a boyo says to your face “I don’t see myself in a romantic relationship with you” after being fucking each other for some time, you probably won’t change his matter on this. So be honest with what you really want. Leave the Academy Award for Best Actress to the Hollywood gals.
If you’ve been thinking about eating a cheeseburger for 5 days, Jesus, eat the cheeseburger!
Making real friends is hard.
Dry shampoo is one of the best things ever invented.
If someone wants to be with you, you will know it, you will feel it.
Be as kind to yourself as you would be with your best friend.
Guys who cry are gold. Emotional intelligence is hot. Communicating is sexy.
There is no such thing as too much cheese. Get out of here.
If you’ve been thinking nonstop about moving to another country, and you don’t have kids or anything that might keep you, stop making excuses and go. Save some money, do a little research, and embark on the most transformative journey of your life so far.
Having a nap with a dog is one of the purest and most magical things ever.
Being a functional adult is hard!!!!!!!!!!!Having a social life!!!!!!!!!!Bills!!!!!!Doctors!!!Mental Heath!!!!!!Work!!!!!!Eating well!!!!!!!!!!!so let’s take it day by day.
Life might get potentially a bit more boring as you grow old, but that’s not a bad thing. You might actually find some peace in it. (I’ve been loving this Miley Cyrus song on the topic, btw)
Also, as that same song says: open bars lead to broken hearts.
Learning a foreign language is one of the most rewarding things you'll ever do. A superpower. You might be on your fourth bladder infection this year, but you can cry in four different languages so who’s the idiot now Dad?
You can’t control who you are drawn or attracted to, but you can control how you act about it.
The fantasy in Sex and The City is not about making a living in New York as a writer and shagging everything that moves. The fantasy in Sex in The City to me is…who the hell has FOUR female best friends available to hang out (and all together!) A FEW TIMES a week???
Never be afraid to be the first one to say I love you.
You’ll know you really want to marry that person when you don’t really care if you’ll be wearing a £1,500 dress or a Lidl plastic bag. You just want to grow old with this person. 💗
Haggis with chips, cheese, and gravy is the best drunk chippy order. Change my mind.
After a breakup, it’s important to spend time alone. Jumping from one relationship to the next one is almost always a recipe for disaster.
Contentment isn't about settling. Contentment is about inner peace.
Sometimes, working in something that is not your passion is actually really good for your mental health! On that same note, not every one of your hobbies has to be capitalized.
You are a hottie.
Keep writing, keep crafting, keep doing the things that make you you.
Without a sense of humour life is not worth it mate.
I’ve probably missed some good stuff on this list and I am going to remember it all the minute I hit Publish.
awww!! So many I can relate with!! 🎉 And happy belated bday!!!
